Teacher Training Camp

9th - 12th Grade Teachers - this camp is for you! Interested in learning about Cyber? Need help in finding materials for your classrooms? Want to earn 1 credit at the graduate level? Did we mention all this is free? Teachers get a $1,000 stipend to assist with attending all events (e.g. accommodation, travel), and a (free) mini-computer during camp to keep. And a cool t-shirt!
ĻӰ is proud to host its second Residential GenCyber Teacher Camp wholly funded by a grant awarded by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation. This week-long residential camp will be held Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28, 2024. As part of the full GenCyber experience, you will also attend a day-long "CyberTaster" session in Spring 2024.
What about your students? We have them covered too! You will be accompanied by up to three of your students when you attend our "Day of Cyber 1.0" (Fall 2024) and our "Day of Cyber 2.0" (Spring 2025) Saturday events. Teachers lead the electives, supported by ĻӰ faculty, your students pick the electives they would like to learn more about!

- GenCyber Teacher Camp, arrive Monday, June 24, 2024, depart Friday, June 28, 2024
- GenCyber Day-of-Cyber 1.0 on Tuesday, October (exact date TBD at Camp). Teachers return for the day; they bring up to 3 of their own students. Electives led by the teachers themselves.
- GenCyber Day-of-Cyber 2.0 on Tuesday, March (exact date TBD at Camp). Teachers return for the day; they bring up to 3 of their own students. Electives led by the teachers themselves.
WHO CAN APPLY?
- Any teacher working primarily with high school (9th - 12th) students who want to put Cyber in the classroom.
- Participated in a GenCyber camp before? Let us know in your packet!
- "Reasonable commuting distance" - This camp is primarily focused on Vermont teachers, but we will happily accept applications from those in nearby states. Please note: Teachers are required to bring their students to the Day of Cyber 1.0/2.0, please consider the commuting time.
REQUIREMENTS
- All Teacher applicants must submit a packet containing:
- A letter of support from your school administrator (e.g. Principal)
- A personal statement addressing the following:
- "What do I want to achieve by attending this GenCyber experience?"
- "What do I hope to learn?"
- "How I intend to integrate lessons into my classroom and/or extracurricular activities."
- A statement indicating "I will participate in CyberTaster, and I will participate with 3 of my students in Day of Cyber 1.0 and Day of Cyber 2.0".
WHY HERE?
ĻӰ is a Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence designated by the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center, and a National Center of Academic Excellence designated by the National Security Agency. The campus is centrally-located within the State of Vermont, making the commute a little easier!
COST?
- Free for all participants! GenCyber is funded by a grant from the National Security Agency and National Science Foundation.

- Breakfast/Lunch is provided during the week-long summer training, lunch is provided during the CyberTaster and Day-of-Cyber 1.0/2.0 day events.
- Graduate credit enrollment at no cost to Teacher participants.
SKILL LEVEL?

- Our aim is to support the teaching and learning of cybersecurity principles and best practices by enabling teachers to engage in hands-on activities focused on the practical application of a diverse range of cyber specializations including digital forensics, cryptography, information assurance, networking, programming, and penetration testing.

MEET YOUR PROGRAM STAFF
Huw Read, Ph.D., GenCyber Program Director - Huw Read began his academic career in 2004 at the University of South Wales (United Kingdom) and has taught a number of specialist courses in digital forensics and cybersecurity. For more than 10 years, he has worked alongside industry and government on a number of cyber-related projects, partnering with diverse teams to design solutions to complex security problems. He has over 20 peer-reviewed publications in Cyber. Several publications have been jointly authored with undergraduate students, helping to better arm them for future cyber-related challenges.
Matthew Bovee, Ph.D., Lead Instructor - Matthew Bovee joined the faculty in the Department of Computer Science in the School of Business & Management at ĻӰ in 2010. He holds a B.S. from Arizona State University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Dr. Bovee has 19 years of teaching experience in Cyber, IS, and Business.
Brucie Donahue, M.Ed., K-12 Pedagogical Expert - Brucie Donahue holds a BS in Secondary Education, an MS in Education in Instructional Technology and is a 33-year veteran of the Vermont public school sector including 24 years in local Northfield schools. She is certified to teach grades K-12 in educational technology. She is an executive board member of Vermont Information Technology Association for the Advancement of Learning [5], Intel teach to the future teacher. She has experience as the K-12 expert in two prior GenCyber camps.
Michael Battig, Ph.D., Pedagogical Instructor - Michael Battig serves as the newly appointed director of the School of Cybersecurity, Data Science and Computing at ĻӰ. He comes with an extensive background that includes eight years of software development work in a business setting, grant writing in his field, and nearly 30 years of undergraduate teaching. From 2007 to 2009, he developed a budding computer science department at the American University of Afghanistan. This undertaking involved creating a sustainable curriculum for students, teaching during one summer with boots on the ground in Kabul for students who hailed from Afghanistan and neighboring countries and recruiting faculty worldwide who were committed to moving the department forward.
Specialist Instructor - Dr. Jonathan Adkins will introduce the fundamentals of ethical hacking in hands-on exercises that demonstrate some of the techniques used at each phase of a network attack. Some popular tools will be used within the Kali Linux framework to familiarize students with information gathering, scanning and enumeration, vulnerability assessment, password cracking, exploitation, and post-exploitation. Dr. Adkins holds a PhD in Information Assurance and an MS in Digital Forensics. He has also received training at SANS Institute in Hacker Tools and Techniques as well as in Advanced Pentesting and Exploit Writing.
Specialist Instructor - Prior Chief Information Security Officer for the State of Vermont, Mr. Kris Rowley will introduce Information Assurance, develop deep-dive with tabletop exercises. He specializes in cyber-law and cybercrime, information assurance management, and management information systems.
Specialist Instructor -Ms. Kristin Hayes is a lecturer in Cybersecurity at ĻӰ. She brings professional experience as a former information security analyst with the State of Vermont, and will lead teachers in lessons on cyber compliance, security planning and security assessments.
CENTER FOR CYBERSECURITY AND FORENSICS EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
With specialist learning environments for the Computer Security & Information Assurance program, the center fosters research and offers outreach activities aimed at developing the cybersecurity professionals in demand in the information economy.
