Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Dive into Your Passions. Explore Limitless Paths.

Our engaging programs allow you to get the full attention of our exceptional faculty from day one. Start using research-grade instrumentation in your first year, and get involved in a professional research project by your junior year.

Is It Right for You?

You should have a strong quantitative literacy to succeed in our programs. The field of chemistry relies on careful measurement and data analysis. If you're curious about the world around you and motivated to solve problems in your respective field, then you'll fit right in!

Big Dreams. Bigger Outcomes.

As a ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ graduate, you'll be highly desired by industry and government employers for your laboratory skills and well-qualified for admission to graduate and professional schools. The courses and labs required for these degrees ensure that you're proficient in the fundamental principles of chemistry and prepared to apply these principles to specialized areas such as environmental, forensic, medicinal, and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Chemistry vs. Biochemistry

Both our Chemistry and Biochemistry programs provide you with a personalized educational experience with high-quality training and mentoring coupled with small class sizes. You'll participate in mentored undergraduate research and hands-on learning opportunities.

Chemistry Major

The Chemistry major gives you an in-depth tour of the five major fields of chemistry: inorganic, organic, analytical, biochemical, and physical chemistry. Our rigorous quantitative training will leave you in high demand for industrial, academic, or professional environments after graduation.

Chemistry lies at the heart of solutions to many modern problems, from developing sustainable materials to discovering new medicines. Chemistry helps society.

When you know chemistry, you understand how other sciences work together to explain and transform the world around us.

Chemistry helps you to develop research, problem-solving, and analytical skills. It requires teamwork and effective communication. These skills are in demand by employers in many industries.

Biochemistry Major

The Biochemistry major joins a thorough chemical education with coursework in Biology Department. Biochemistry lies at the heart of life-sciences and our graduates are highly-prepared for a broad field of research and career opportunities.

Biochemistry studies the molecules that make up life. Proteins and enzymes, RNA and DNA  â€” it is a science that explains cellular machinery's mechanics.

These insights are applied via gene therapy, biologics, bioprosthetics, bioinformatics, and other avenues to improve lives.

Our program includes the sciences of molecular biology, immunochemistry, neurochemistry, bioinorganic, bioorganic, and biophysical chemistry.

Experiential Learning

"With lots of guidance and help from my mentor and the Undergraduate Research Committee, by the fall of my Junior year, I procured a grant for my work in developing a target delivery treatment for Parkinson's disease." — Shawnae T. Evans '21

Career Outcomes

As a graduate, you'll be highly desired by industry and government employers for your laboratory skills, and are well-qualified for admission to graduate and professional schools.

The courses and labs required for these degrees assure that you are proficient in the fundamental principles of chemistry and biochemistry and prepare you to apply these principles to specialized careers.

ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ American Chemical Society (ACS)

Get active outside the classroom by joining one of the world's largest scientific organizations and the only undergraduate chapter located in Vermont. The Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society holds several events throughout the year where you can get involved and have fun with peers who share your interests and passions.

National Chemistry Week

Our American Chemical Society holds demonstrations on campus during National Chemistry Week.

ACS Murder Mystery Dinner

The ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ ACS hosts the annual ACS Murder Mystery Dinner alongside the Campus Activities Board (CAB). Together they collaborate with clubs on the ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ campus. ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ's theater club, Pegasus Players volunteers to act out the murder mystery. Participants attempt to find the murderer over the course of the evening. The Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team has also attended and provided a demonstration in previous years.

Meet Our Faculty
